DR. H. Syahrul Yasin Limpo adalah anak kedua dari pasangan H. Muh. Yasin Limpo dengan Hj. Nurhayati Yasin Limpo. Syahrul lahir di Ngawing, Makassar pada tanggal 15 Maret 1955. Syahrul Yasin Limpo saat ini menjabat sebagai Gubernur Sulawesi Selatan yang pertama kali dipilih secara langsung. Sebelum menjabat sebagai Gubernur, Syahrul Yasin Limpo pernah menjabat sebagai Bupati di Kabupaten Gowa selama dua periode, kemudian menjabat Wakil Gubernur selama satu periode mendampingi Amin Syam, sebelum akhirnya memenangkan pertarungan dengan Amin Syam dalam pilkada Sulsel di tahun 2007 setelah keduanya sama-sama maju bertarung sebagai calon incumbent.
Pada pilkada Sulawesi Selatan tahun 2007, Syahrul Yasin Limpo berpasangan dengan Agus Arifin Numang (saat itu menjabat sebagai ketua DPRD Sulsel) yang merupakan salah satu pimpinan DPD Golkar Sulsel. Pasangan tersebut diusung oleh koalisi Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan (PDIP), Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN), Partai Demokrasi Kebangsaan (PDK) dan Partai Damai Sejahtera (PDS). Sementara rival terberat Syahrul yaitu Amin Syam yang juga ketua DPD Golkar Sulsel di usung oleh koalisi Partai Golkar, Partai Kebangkitan bangsa (PKB) dan Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) serta Partai Demokrat, ditambah sejumlah partai kecil lainnya. Setelah menjalani persaingan yang ketat, Syahrul Yasin Limpo akhirnya memenangi pemilihan Gubernur Sulawesi Selatan 2007 bersama pasangannya, Agus Arifin Nu’mang.
Gubernur yang terkenal dengan tagline “Sayang” ini (Sayang merupakan singkatan dari Syahrul Yasin Limpo – Agus Arifin Nu’mang) ini mulai merealisasikan ide-idenya, antara lain pendidikan gratis dan kesehatan gratis. Syahrul mengungkapkan bahwa hal dasar dalam mensejahterakan rakyat dan membuat suatu bangsa maju terletak dari tingkat pendidikan suatu rakyat atau bangsa dan hak dasar manusia sebenarnya adalah kesehatan, karena tidak akan makmur suatu bangsa bila kesehatannya tidak diperhatikan.
Oleh karena itu Syahrul Yasin Limpo berusaha mewujudkan ide ini, dan sekarang ini dapat dilihat, Pendidikan gratis telah direalisasikan di kabupaten Gowa dan daerah lainnya sampai tingkat SMA. Dibidang kesehatan, rumah sakit yang ditunjuk pemerintah menggratiskan biaya kesehatan yakni melayani pasien dengan hanya menerima pembayaran fotokopi KTP dan Kartu Keluarga.
